For Carlos* and Martha, their dreams of homeownership are now a reality.
Originally from Haiti, Carlos and Martha chose to make the difficult move to the United States in search of greater opportunity. When they arrived in St. Louis more than two years ago, they faced the same challenges confronting many newly arrived families: limited resources, unfamiliar surroundings, and uncertainty about where to turn for help.
Their first stop was LifeWise StL, where they sought assistance finding housing and accessing basic necessities. The couple visited the food Market and Bodega thrift store, secured a place to live, and received a referral to Home Sweet Home, where they were able to find furniture for their new residence. For Carlos and Martha, it was the first step toward creating a sense of home in a new country.
Soon the couple enrolled in LifeWise StL’s Grupo en Desarrollo, a financial education program aimed at helping new arrivals build financial knowledge through classes and coaching support. The economic wellness program offered practical financial guidance as well as childcare services for their four children, making it possible for both Carlos and Martha to attend every session together and learn side by side.
Martha, eager to make the most of their opportunities, became a regular shopper at the LifeWise Market and Bodega. Over time, she began bringing others from her community to take advantage of the resources available. Her warmth and generosity were contagious, and she soon became an informal ambassador for LifeWise, helping others discover the same support she had received.
Meanwhile, Carlos completed Grupo en Desarrollo and secured stable employment, a major milestone. In addition to supporting his family through his work, he volunteered as an interpreter at community meetings, helping others navigate language barriers and access important information. With newfound financial stability in his job, Carlos enrolled in LifeWise StL’s Individual Development Account (IDA) Program, which matched his savings and helped him move toward the dream that once seemed distant: homeownership. Together they saved, improved their credit, and stayed focused.
In spring 2026, more than two years after beginning their journey with LifeWise StL, Carlos and Martha achieved their goal: the family purchased their first home. Today they are overjoyed to provide a safe and stable environment for their four children, where new family traditions and memories can be made.
Their story reflects the determination of immigrant families working to build a future in a new country. It is also a testament to the impact of community support, financial education, and opportunity. Today, Carlos and Martha are not only creating a brighter future for their own family—they are helping strengthen the community that welcomed them along the way.
